Cub e-Bulletin  June, 2009
Dear Cub Scout Leader,

This is the monthly e-bulletin to all Scout leaders in the Golden Arrow District.  Please forward this newsletter to all the volunteers in your pack.  This email has been sent in html and text formats.  Use whichever format that best serves your Pack's needs.  Anything underlined contains a link to additional information.

My name is Jarrod Aden and I am the editor of the monthly e-bulletin for the Golden Arrow District.  The purpose of this bulletin is to provide relevant and timely information to all Packs in the District.  Remember, your newest parents are the ones who need this information the most so be sure to share it.  I you have information to share, please send it to me by email at the address below for inclusion in the next issue.
Twilight Camp is finally here!

Twilight Camp registration is closed.

For those of you who already registered, go to the Twilight Camp Website to get any information that you may have lost or forgotten.

New District Calendars are here!

The new District Calendars are here!  Hardcopies of the calendars were distribute at Roundtable, but all the calendars are available on-line.  The on-line versions include special features such as the Unit Planner, Program Summary Page, and training dates.  This new calendar is a must have for Units when planning the next year of Scouting.
Summertime Planning
summertimeNow is the time to start planning for the next year of scouting.  Make sure you have your District calendar in hand when setting your Pack calendar so you don't miss out on District events.

Remember - If your pack plans properly, the Pack, your Dens, and the Scouts could win the National Summertime Award
Get trained!

Your District's goal is 100% trained leaders.  A lot of training is available on-line which means you can do it on your own schedule at your leisure.  To sign up on-line to take training, you will need your personal id#.  If you don't have your pocket id card from BSA, contact your Pack leadership to get this number.

Keep an eye on the District's training schedule for opportunities to attend some great training courses and meet some exceptional fellow Scouters and parents.  Pack leaders should encourage training for all parents to help the District meet their goal.

Every Scout deserves leadership from a properly trained leader.  The training is always excellent and takes so little of your time.

Remember - Your Pack can win an Excellence in Training Award for having as little as 75% of its direct contact leaders trained for their position.
Past due items...

If you have not already done so, please see to it that your Pack has taken care of the following:

Scout Fair Tickets are past due - If your unit has not turned in your unsold Scout Fair tickets and ticket sale monies then please do so as soon as possible.  Currently over 2,000 tickets are outstanding.

Scoutparents Unit Coordinator - By now, all units should have a designated Scoutparents Unit Coordinator.  Their job is to assign each parent with at least one specific task, assignment, or project annually; and to provide an orientation to new families.

Pack leadership changes - If you have recently made changes to your Pack's leadership, don't forget to turn in properly filled out and signed adult leadership forms so that the Council's records will be properly updated.  Remember to notify the webmaster if you have a new Cubmaster or Committee Chair.
Odds and ends

Tour Permits - You can now file your Tour Permits online!  Filing your Tour Permits is quick and easy to do.  Best off all, you can keep repetitive information stored in your online account making your second Tour Permit even easier to complete.  Online Tour Permits require a myscouting login which you can easily set up.  You will need your personal id# which is on your BSA pocket id card.

Friends of Scouting Campaign - The official end of the campaign is near!  Check your Unit's updated statistics at the link below and boost your Unit's participation by encouraging all your unpledged families to donate online using the link below.  Turn your collections in at roundtable to help the District meet their goal for 100% participation.

Wood Badge - Wood Badge is a mentally intense 6-day leadership course designed for all adult Scouters.  It is hoped that every adult Scouter will take the course to help them focus on their responsibilities, identify goals, and to give them the tools to reach them.

Wood Badge - more info

Free publicity - There are opportunities for your Pack to get free publicity by sending press releases for your event to The Chronicle or Southwest News.  Sending a press release helps you to promote your Pack and enhance your community recognition and you can even win the Scouting in the News Award by getting your articles published.

Planning ahead...

Fall Recruiting Rally

NEW - In the Fall, the entire District (all Units) will have their first rally night on the same night.  A large centralized turn-in for new applications will be offered and the District will be able to get the printing and distribution of the FREE flyers done more quickly.  Stay tuned for the date, which will be announced after the official date is agreed to by the HISD superintendent.  The Tentative dates are September 10th and September 17th.

In the meantime, work on your "Parent's Guide" for next year.   You will need an attractive parent's guide or welcome kit for new families.  Now is a great time to work on the items you want to include, while things are still fresh on your mind.   Pack 34 has an excellent welcome packet, which you might try to use to create a unique guide for your own Pack.  Contact Dale Fitz to request a copy of his Pack 34 Parent's Guide in electronic format.

2009-2010 Unit Planning - As you are planning for your Unit's next year of Scouting, don't forget to appoint someone for these important positions:

Popcorn Sales
Friends of Scouting Chair
Scout Fair Ticket Sales

These are excellent roles for parents who don't want a year long committment but can do a diligent, organized work with focused enthusiasm during your Unit's campaign.

District Event Budgets - If you are currently involved in planning a District event for 2009 - 2010, your event budgets are due to the District no later than August 15th.  Please have your committee begin setting an event budget and turn it in prior to the deadline.

Cub Scout Fun Day - Cub Scout Fun Day will be on October 17th.  This event is designed to be a "mini Scout Fair" and all units should begin planning to have a booth or activity for the scouts.  Coordinate your activities and booths with Beverly Folts to avoid duplication of activities.
Your District needs your help

Cub Scout Fun Day Chair - The District needs a volunteer to be the Cub Scout Fun Day Chair for this event in the year 2010.  If you would like to help out contact Jeff Hutchinson.

This publication is a volunteer effort on my part and is not an official communication of the Boy Scouts of America.

Thank you for taking time to read this and for passing it along to your Scout Leaders and parents.  If someone in your pack is not receiving this bulletin, have them click the "join our mailing list" button" in the yellow column to the right.  If you would like to mention an upcoming event, please email me.

Sincerely,

Council made a huge announcement last month.  There will be a Council Camporee set for 10/08/10 with an estimated 35,000 people in attendance.  It's more than a year away, but it isn't too soon to start spreading the word and generating some excitement.
Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts will have a 2 night event filled weekend.  Webelos will be invited to participate in a visitor overnight program on October 9th.  Remember this is next year, so you have some webelos who will be scouts by then and a new round of webelos eligible to join in the fun.  Keep your calendars open for this exciting event celebrating the 100th year of scouting!
