The Sam Houston Area Council held its annual Recognition Dinner on May 7, 2002. At this dinner, the Silver Beaver award was presented to 37 individuals. Of those, three were from the Golden Arrow District and are as follows:
Troxel
Ballou
Troxel Ballou began his adult Scouting service in 1973 as a Webelos Den Leader in the former Southwest District of SHAC. He has served as Assistant Scoutmaster, on the Boy Scout and Venturing Roundtable staff, Boy Scout and Venturing training team, and as the GAD Friends of Scouting Chairman. Troxel currently serves as advisor to Venturing Crew 50 and is a Troop 50 Committee Member.
Troxel has served as Philmont Crew Advisor three times and has also served numerous times on the staff of Train the Trainer Conference, University of Scouting and Commissioner's Conference, including being part of the Key Staff. Troxel has completed Scoutmastership Fundamentals, Venturing Advisor Specific, and Wood Badge Training. His honors include Scouter's Training Award, Commissioner Key, Arrowhead Honor, Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, District Committee Key and District Award of Merit.
Troxel worships with the Alief Church of Christ and is a Bible class teacher.
Nancy K.
Johnson
Nancy Johnson has been an active Scouter for 10 Years. She served as Vice Chairman for the GAD, Webelos Den Leader, Pack Committee Chairman, Troop Committee Chairman, and currently serves as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 11. Nancy has been a major force in organizing the bi-annual GAD Merit Badge Fair. She is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Nance has served as expedition leader on high adventure canoe trips to Minnesota and Colorado and backing treks to New Mexico and Yosemite National Park.
Nancy has completed Cub Scout Basic Training, Scoutmastership Fundamentals, and Wood Badge training. Her honors include the Cub Scouter Award, Scouter's Training Award, and District Award of Merit.
Nancy is extremely active in the affairs of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on numerous committees.
William H.
Wallace
Bill Wallace has served in the GAD for 12 years. During that time, he has been a Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Scoutmaster. He served on the World Jamboree staff in Santiago, Chile, and has lead high adventure expeditions to Seabase, the Boundary Waters canoe area, and to Philmont. Bill also has served as a Key Staff member for University of Scouting.
In 1999, he represented the SHAC at the 100 Year celebration of Scouting at Mafeking, South Africa, and he is currently serving as Assistant Scoutmaster for the 20th World Jamboree, Sattahip, Thailand.
Bill has completed Cub Scout Basic Training, Scoutmastership Fundamentals, and Wood Badge training. His honors include the Cub Scouter Award, Den Leader Award, Webelos Den Leader Award, Scouter's Training Award, Scouter's Key, Scoutmaster Award of Merit, and District award of Merit.
Bill has been active in the community through leadership positions in the Houston Central Lion's Club. He is a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church where he has served as an usher since 1974.The BSA, acting through the National Court of Honor and upon the nomination of the Sam Houston Area Council, may present the Silver Beaver Award to persons for their distinguished service to youth. The SHAC may make a limited number of nomination each year, according to the total number of units registered in the council.
This award is bestowed for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered adult volunteers. The award may not be applied for personally, only those persons who have been nominated by their Scouting peers are considered.
The recipient receives a plaque, signed certificate, official knot badge, and the medal shown below.
