| Fast Start |
This on-line course, which takes about 30 minutes, provides a quick introduction to the Scouting program. This on-line course is available on the scouting.org website - click here for that site. Alternatively, you can watch the Fast Start video which takes about 30 minutes and is available from the Scout Office (many Packs own a copy). |
| This is Scouting |
This 60-minute video presentation highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.
It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. This on-line course is available on the scouting.org website - click here for that site. This is a cross-program course and each leader needs to take it only once. Note: "This is Scouting" replaces the "New Leader Essentials" course beginning in 2009. |

Cub Leader & Position Specific Training |
This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role.
This training contains three segments that take approximately 4.5 hrs.
Those three segments are "Introduction to Cub Scouting", "How We Have Fun" and position specific training. The position specific courses are are as follows:

| BALOO |
Basis Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation.
This course is designed for leaders who are in charge Pack campouts.
Among other topics, this course covers the rules, guidelines, and safety considerations
for "family camping" organized by a Pack.
Any adult who has an interest in camping can take this course. Click here for details on BALOO. |
| OWLS |
Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills Training. The emphasis of this course is on outdoor activities, skills and camping for Webelos. While designed for Webelos and Bear leaders, any adult can take this course. This is a one-day course and is usually conducted in town. Click here for details on OWLS. Also, see below for "Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills", which is a course that covers similar outdoor skills but in greater detail, and is design for current or future leaders of Boy Scouts. |
| Roundtable Meetings |
Meet with other Cub leaders at the GAD Roundtable, which is held on the first Thursday of most months. Click here for details on Cub Scout Roundtable. |
| Akela's Trail |
A major one-day training fair held for Cub leaders from all over the Sam Houston Area Council.
Akela's Trail is usually held in early November. Click here for details. (This event was formerly called Cub Leader Pow Wow.) |
| Advanced Training |
If you are a Webelos leader or interested in delivering the outdoor portion of the scouting program, consider taking Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills - click here for details. This course involves a weekend campout and is a requirement to be trained as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Also see the other training courses described under "Training Overview", including the Wood Badge course which is open for Cub leaders. |
